Why is my range shorter in cold weather? (Winter Riding Guide)

Cold weather can reduce the battery's usable energy and available power, so your riding range may be shorter than in warmer conditions. The charge indicator can also fall more quickly under load.

Why the display may still show charge

Cold temperatures can increase battery resistance. Acceleration, hills and high motor demand can cause a temporary voltage drop, often called voltage sag. The system may reduce assistance or shut off if a protection threshold is reached. The display is not a guarantee of the remaining distance.

A shutdown does not by itself prove that the battery is healthy, damaged, or that every protection feature worked correctly. Repeated shutdowns, unexpected large charge drops or abnormal battery behavior need investigation. Stop in a safe place; do not repeatedly restart the bike to force continued assistance. See Bike shuts off while the display still shows battery remaining.

How much range will I lose?

There is no single percentage that applies to every battery, temperature or ride. Battery condition, how long it has been cold, assistance level, load, route and weather all matter. Do not rely on a fixed winter-range percentage or your usual warm-weather distance.

Plan conservatively

  • Plan shorter trips, leave extra battery reserve and have an alternative way home.
  • Keep the battery indoors in an appropriate dry location before use. Do not heat it with hand warmers, heating pads or other external heat sources.
  • Use smooth acceleration and avoid unnecessary high motor demand. Stop if the bike behaves abnormally.
  • Before charging a cold battery, allow it to warm naturally and make sure charging connections are dry. A fixed waiting time does not prove the battery is warm enough.

For Hybrid CSC and StormX covered by the linked 2025 manuals: use the bike only between −20°C and 45°C (−4°F to 113°F), and charge only at ambient temperatures between 0°C and 40°C (32°F to 104°F). −20°C is already the lower operating limit, not a promise of unchanged performance or safe ice traction. See Hybrid CSC / StormX operating-temperature limits and cold-weather checks. Other bike or battery versions must follow their own supplied manuals.
