Why won't my battery charge? (Charger light stays green in winter)

The Issue You plug in your charger after a cold ride, but the charger light remains Green immediately. It does not turn Red to indicate charging, and the battery does not gain any power.

The Explanation: It’s a Safety Feature, Not a Defect If your battery temperature is near or below freezing (32°F / 0°C), this behavior is normal.

Your battery is equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) that constantly monitors temperature. The BMS is actively blocking the charging current to protect the battery cells.

Important: Riding vs. Charging It is important to understand the difference between using the battery and charging it:

  • Riding (Discharging) is OK: It is generally safe to ride your e-bike in cold weather. You will not damage the battery simply by using it. However, you will experience a temporary decrease in range (mileage) because the cold slows down the internal chemistry. This performance drop is temporary and will return to normal when the weather warms up.

  • Charging is Critical: Charging a frozen battery is dangerous. The chemical reaction required to charge is different from discharging, and doing it in the cold causes permanent damage.

Why does the BMS block charging? Charging a lithium-ion battery when it is frozen causes a chemical reaction called "Lithium Plating."

  • Instead of storing energy safely, the lithium ions turn into solid metal crystals inside the battery.

  • This causes permanent, irreversible damage to the battery's capacity.

  • In severe cases, it can cause internal short circuits and create a fire hazard.

How to Fix It Do not force the connection. The green light will not turn red until the battery internals are warm enough to safely accept a charge.

  1. Bring it Inside: Take the battery indoors to a room-temperature environment (65°F - 75°F).

  2. Wait: Let the battery sit for 1 to 2 hours. It takes time for the warmth to reach the internal cells, even if the plastic shell feels warm.

  3. Try Again: Once the internal temperature rises above freezing, the BMS will unlock, and the charger light will turn Red automatically.

Charger Has No Lights At All?

If your charger shows no lights whatsoever (not green, not red), follow these steps to determine whether the issue is the outlet or the charger itself.

  1. Test the outlet: Try plugging a phone charger or another device into the same outlet. If the device does not power on, the outlet may have no power — try a different outlet in your home.

  2. Disconnect the charger from the bike: Unplug the charger from the battery port on the bike completely.

  3. Plug the charger into a working outlet: With the charger disconnected from the bike, plug it into an outlet that you have confirmed has power.

  4. Check for a green light: A working charger should show a green light as soon as it is plugged into a live outlet, even when not connected to the bike.

If there is still no green light, the charger itself is faulty. Please contact our support team to arrange a replacement charger.
