Ebike Component Safety Check Before Each Ride

Pre-Ride Safety Checklist

A quick inspection before each ride takes less than two minutes and can prevent accidents or mechanical issues on the road. Run through each item below before you head out.

1. Tire Pressure

Check that both tires are inflated to the correct PSI. Most FavoriteBikes tires are rated for 40–65 PSI — check the sidewall of your tire for the specific range. Use a floor pump with a gauge for accuracy. Underinflated tires reduce efficiency and increase the risk of pinch flats.

2. Brakes

Squeeze each brake lever firmly. The lever should feel firm and stop the wheel with at least 1–2 inches of clearance from the handlebar. Spin each wheel and apply the brake — the wheel should stop cleanly without squealing excessively or pulsing. If the lever pulls all the way to the bar, the pads may be worn or the cable needs adjusting.

3. Headset

Apply the front brake and rock the bike forward and back. If you feel any knocking or looseness, your headset may need tightening. A loose headset affects steering control — don't ride until it's secured.

4. Chain

Visually inspect the chain for rust, stiff links, or excessive dirt buildup. A properly maintained chain should move smoothly and have a light coating of lubricant. Wipe it down with a clean cloth and apply chain lube if it looks dry. A worn or dirty chain accelerates wear on the cassette and chainring.

5. Wheels & Quick Releases

If your bike has quick-release skewers, confirm they are fully closed and secure. Grab each wheel and try to wiggle it side-to-side — there should be no lateral play. Also check that the wheel sits centered in the frame.

6. Battery

Check your battery level before setting out — especially for longer rides. Make sure the battery is fully seated and locked into its mount. A loose battery connection can cause unexpected power cuts while riding.

7. Lights

Turn on your front and rear lights and confirm both are functioning. Even in daylight, lights increase your visibility to cars and other road users. Check that the mounts are tight and the lights are aimed correctly.

When in doubt, visit a local bike shop for a professional tune-up. Regular maintenance keeps your FavoriteBikes e-bike running safely and extends the life of its components.
